Step 1: Assess

Assess

LAYING THE FOUNDATION FOR LIVE-COACHING SUCCESS

When we begin working with a client, the first step in our approach is assessment. This stage is all about understanding the current situation—both the visible challenges and the ones lurking beneath the surface.

Here’s how we dive into this crucial step and the tools we use to set the foundation for impactful change.

Statistical Loss and Waste Analysis

We start by identifying where performance is falling short and where the biggest opportunities lie. Using a standardized questionnaire, we gather relevant data from selected areas. This helps us uncover inefficiencies, like downtime, waste, or process gaps, and provides us with a clear picture of where intervention can drive the most impact.

For example, we might analyze production losses over the past three months, pinpointing trends that show us where team leaders are struggling to meet expectations. This data becomes the backbone of our insights.

Observing Shop-Floor Meetings in Action

Next, we focus on key events, such as shift handovers or daily performance meetings, where team leaders play a critical role. Using tailored observation forms, we evaluate how effectively these moments are being managed.

Are meetings structured and purposeful? Is the communication clear? Are issues being addressed collaboratively? These observations provide a deeper understanding of the behaviors and habits that influence daily performance.

Evaluating Team Leader Competencies

Team leaders are at the heart of daily operations, so we use a standardized competency profile to assess their capabilities related to performance management.

We observe how they lead, communicate, and respond to challenges. For instance, do they ask the right questions? Do they facilitate problem-solving effectively? These insights allow us to identify specific areas where coaching can have the greatest impact on both their confidence and capabilities.

Reporting and Sharing Results

Once we’ve gathered all our observations and data, we create a clear, actionable report out to share with you. This report highlights:

  • Key performance gaps.
  • Observed behaviors and opportunities for growth.
  • Specific areas where live-coaching will drive the greatest improvement.

This is a collaborative moment. We ensure you and your team leaders are fully aligned on the findings and agree on the focus areas for the next stage: building the case for change.

Why Assessing First Matters

Rushing into live-coaching without understanding the current state is like building a house without a blueprint—it’s inefficient and doesn’t deliver lasting results. By using these tools, we ensure that every coaching moment is targeted, relevant, and designed to deliver real impact where it’s needed most.
